"Warm and fuzzy" part 2!

This is my daughters favorite part of boiled dinner. Bean soup made from the leftovers. I take out the cabbage and potatoes, cut the ham into small pieces, smash the carrots and add a jar of precooked beans. I have also tried the mixed beans but Laurie likes the navy beans best. Because I cooked 2 ham bones I got lots of soup. Laurie is having dinner here (after I do her hair), I gave my neighbor a bowl, made a bowl for my son and his wife and L. and I will have 2 each for the freezer. When I took over the neighbors she gave me 2 pieces of pumpkin pie, another of L's favorites. That will be desert for our "warm and fuzzy" dinner! We got lots of snow last night but it looked beautiful this am. It's a great day for a bowl of hot soup.
I had about 8 inches to shovel today! All the schools in the entire area are closed.
There is a lake effect snow watch until this afternoon and we're supposed to have this weather for a couple weeks.

A "warm and fuzzy" day.

Yesterday was a "warm and fuzzy" day for us. It was cold and snowy so a perfect day for comfort food! I also got my walk and driveway snowblown by my son while he was waiting for supper. You can check out my "Warm and fuzzy food?" post to see what I'm talking about. I had a couple ham bones in the freezer so decided to make boiled dinner. My kids and my daughter-in-law all love it. My son-in-law doesn't but he had to work. I started the bones (with quite a bit of meat still on them) about 7 am.
About 1 o'clock I removed the bones, cut up the meat and added small hole onions. About 2 I added some carrots and an hour after that I added potatoes.
45 minutes before dinner time I put cabbage wedges on top and covered with a lid so the cabbage would steam. I just remove the cabbage and set the pan on the table. Some rolls and milk and there you have a "warm and fuzzy" meal!
I was so excited to get my bathroom done I didn't post my usual Monday Jerzie pic so here she is playing with Aunt Laurie and Daddy before Mommy gets out of work.

Yeah!!!!!!

My bathroom is all done! This is a closeup of the border.
This is the wall paper. I had burgundy, green and stars in there before and I wanted to keep them.
This is over the sink. The big star on the left is a burgundy and iron towel holder. I have a matching toilet paper holder.
This is my tiny window. The berries are burgundy and the small stars are rusty tin. The curtain holders look like arcitectual stars. The curtain is just a piece of unbleached muslin.
This is an angel I made a few years ago She has rusty wings and a rusty banner that says "Enjoy life's simple pleasures".
The hanging angel is made from a linen napkin and the one on the shelf is made from an old hankie. (I didn't make them)
This cabinet is over the toilet.
I change this chair out for a small green table or a small off white crackled one. I can't change the furniture much in my house so I like to at least change the small pieces.
I'm pleased with the way everything came out and very glad to have the mess cleaned up!

Progress!

Guess what I'll be doing the next couple days! Everything is ready and I'm really tired of having my bathroom a mess! I'm hoping to get the papering done before work tomorrow.

For those of you that have asked, the shower is still NOT leaking! I'm almost afraid to say those words. I sure hope it continues.

Today when I got up it was 28 degrees and now it's 34! What a difference from the 3 yesterday! It was even raining a little. I got the front walk to the house scraped down to bare concrete. I think I'll go work on the main sidewalk and open the doors and windows while I'm out there to get rid of my cold germs.

Winter Decor

Winter Decor
Intricate forms of filigree capture eye and mind
As I look at the frost on the window and see nature's splendid design.
Dramatic, dainty, elegant, surreal -an enchanting window-dress -
And windows in a tiny home have donned winter's best.
Joan Adams Burchell

These pictures were taken this morning in my upstairs, which I don't use or heat in winter. The temp when I got up this am was 3.

Just stuff!

My weather bug is blinking 7 degrees at me. I'm glad I can stay home tonight! Thank you all for asking, I am feeling better. My cold has settled in my chest so I'm doing a lot of coughing, but I really do feel better. My voice is still pretty bad. Last week end both my daughter and daughter-in-law almost hung up on me because they thought they had the wrong number!
I will leave you with this but, please, don't any of you be offended! (I'm a real blonde!)

One winter morning a couple was listening to the radio over breakfast.

They hear the announcer say, "We are going to have 8 to 10 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the even-numbered side of the street, so the snow plows can get through. Norman 's wife goes out and moves her car.

A week later while they are eating breakfast again, the radio announcer says, "We are expecting 10 to 12 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the odd-numbered side of the street, so the snow plows can get through." Norman 's wife goes out and moves her car again.

The next week they are again having breakfast, when the radio announcer says "We are expecting 12 to 14 inches of snow today. You must park..." Then the power goes out.

Norman's wife is very upset and with a worried look on her face she says, "Honey, I don't know what to do. Which side of the street do I need to park on so the snow plows can get through?"

With the love and understanding in his voice that all men who are married to blondes exhibit, Norman says...

"Why don't you just leave it in the garage this time?"

Final beauty shop tour.

In looking back I realized I never finished my beauty shop tour. For those who missed it all started here . Then I showed my hat bathroom.
The first part of this display is here
This wall is filled with old stuff. I found this travel beauty kit at an antique store. The graphics are hair net packages. The first three items are early crimping irons. These packages are hair color. All these irons, except the one with the yellow handle need to be heated on a stove or fire. The one with the yellow handle was my Moms. It has a cord that goes into the handle like an old coffee pot cord.
These are clippers. I can't even imagine trying to cut with these but customers have told me they were used on them!
I made up this shadow box for some of my smaller items(I had to take it down because I kept getting a glare). The red box is hairpins. The green bead thing on the left is a bun cover. The funny looking item on the bottom right is to make pincurls. My favorite 2 things are on the top left and middle with the orange band. The first one is a package of "bendies". They are like wire covered with cloth and the package says they will give you a perfect bob. The middle package is basically the same thing from an earlier time. They are made of leather . There are 2 of them next to the package. Our "bendies" are wire covered with foam.
As you can see from all my "stuff", things really don't change much, they are just made more up to date with new materials. I hope you have enjoyed this look into the past. Next time you go to the hairdresser be thankful that things have changed!

Grandpa

I'm awake now, Grandma!I had to get a new scanner so I thought I'd try it out today. This is a picture of my Grandpa when he was christened.
If you look close at the picture you can see that this is the slip under his dress. I don't know what ever happened to the dress but I have the slip. It is about a yard long with a 6 in waistband and it is cotton.
This is one of my favorite pictures of him. My brothers son and my daughter were born 5 weeks apart. This is Grandpa with both of them. He loved babies and would let his granddaughters (he had 10 grandchildren and my brother is the oldest and the only boy) and great granddaughter do anything they wanted! I remember us girls sitting around him on the back and arms of a chair combing his hair. The Vitalis was running down his face.My daughter was 4 when he and Grandma came up from Florida for the summer. She had him wrapped around her finger! Whenever she spent the night she made him go to bed when she did. We were never brats around Grandpa but he sure did spoil us with love! This picture of me, my ex and daughter with Grandma and Grandpa was taken that summer. He died a couple months later.
The outfit my daughter has on is green with a pink ladybug. My Grandma knitted it for her . What great memories I have!

My days

This is pretty much what I've been about the last few days! I worked both jobs on Saturday but had Sunday off. All I did was watch a movie, read some blogs and a book. I didn't even comment on any of your blogs! Sorry, just not enough energy ! I was supposed to run register from 7 to 11 tonight but called in sick. I didn't even have Jerzie today. I am feeling better so I'll have her tomorrow instead. I'm planning on going to work at 6 tomorrow night. I'm not used to being shut up in the house but I haven't even minded. I'm not usually sick and this year I've had the stomache flu and now this. I'm sure glad I had my flu shot!

Winter outside, spring inside!

I got my workout again today! I even did the driveway this time. My son came over awhile ago and did it again for me. His snow blower is broken and the part won't be in until Wednesday so he had to do it by hand. When it gets bad he usually takes care of me and his Dad. My small electric snow blower is out there in the shed. Good place for it don't you think?I bought myself this primrose at work the other night. I don't think I have this color.
I have a horrible head cold so I left a message for my daughter to pick up some drugs at Walmart for me. She brought me this beautiful bouquet of tulips! I've never been one to buy fresh flowers but they sure have a way of brightening things up, both my home and my spirits! Next time you're out pick up a little spring and see what it does for you!

More Sarah's Attic

These are a couple more of my Sarah's Attic collection. This is a policeman with a lost teddy bear. They quite often are the same kids with different outfits. This one is a redhead like one of the preachers in my previous post. His name is Twinkle.
This is Tillie. She wants to be a school teacher. There are several different Tillie figures, also. This girl is not named. She is one of my favorites. I love all the detail in the wicker chair.

Water Testing!

(This is the only water pic I had!)
I only have 2 hours between jobs today so no time for much of a post. I wanted to let you know that I tested my shower for the first time today. Boy, was I glad to get in my shower. It's REALLY cold upstairs and the shower head is aweful! Trouble was I was almost afraid to get out of the shower to see if it had leaked! ALL WAS DRY!!!! I don't want to get too excited because one test doesn't always mean that it is really okay but at least I have hope! To those of you who are sick of hearing about my bathroom, sorry! My paper is not in yet so I'll go on to other things until the bathroom is done.

Bargains galore!

Jerzie got a new Winnie the Pooh book that makes the crinkly sound that she loves.
My daughter and I each got this chair at Marshall's (outlet store). It feels like concrete but not so heavy. I seem to have a thing for chairs and it was only $5.99.I'm trying it here with a bird L. (my daughter ) gave me for Christmas. I'm not sure where it will end up.
Our first stop is always Kohl's(department store). They have great sales on clothes and they are just about giving away left over Christmas stuff. I got my daughter-in-law this nice warm house coat just because it was on sale and I know she'll love it! I got myself the hat . Brown goes with my jacket and I freeze when I get out of work at 10.
Of course Jerzie had to get some new stuff. I found the fleece outfit and the turtleneck onsie at Children's Place. If I got a charge card I got all 3 pieces for $8.90! The 2 pair of pants and the onsie are from Target. $13.50 for all three. The set of 2 blanket sleepers were at Babies"R"Us for $6.70.
This stuff all came from A C Moore (super craft store). The 2 books were $1.00 each. They are a little old for Jerzie now but I'm sure we'll read them alot later. The berry garland is for my bathroom and I always buy my covered bulbs there because they are only $1.99 for 2. I keep lights in my windows year around, day and night.
They also have great tarts here. This one smells wonderful! Only $1.00!
We found these 2 angels at Burlington Coat Factory. They will be a great addition to my garden. They were $10.00 more each at Michael's (craft store) almost across the street! I got them for $10. and $15.
I did get these at Michael's tho. The balls are covered with feathers. I guess I could have gotten another bag but they were pretty expensive. I'll get them next time when we have a Joann's coupon. Both AC Moore and Micheal's take the coupons.L. gave me one to get this turtle, another addition to my garden.
Well except for a couple stocking stuffers for next year that I can't show you and a nut ctacker I had to get to replace the one my son broke this year (It was my grandma's so I guess it lasted pretty well) that's all of my bargains! See why we shop on Martin Luther King Day? I think we did pretty well. L will probably show you her stuff today too. You can go here to check it out!
