A Gift!

Jerzie is visiting today but since I have been so busy getting ready for Christmas I decided to do my post ahead of time and spend the day just playing. We worked on a project for Mommy and Daddy last week and we didn't want them to see it so we saved the pictures. First we made a foamboard circle. Then we wadded up different shades of green tissue paper and glued them to the circle.

We made a bow and put a string of red beads on it. I had more decorations but Jerzie was having so much fun with the left over string of beads that she said we were done. I ended up hooking the beads together with a twist tie and she wore it for a necklace on Christmas.

She put stickers on the back and we put it in a gift bag. Of course she gave it to Mommy as soon as she walked in the door!

Snowy Sunday

As of Christmas Eve day we have had 84 inches of snow so far this season. We didn't have this much until mid February last year!
I woke up to 60 degrees this am and my back yard looks like this.
Since it is so nice out and I'm supposed to be showing snow pictures, I decided to change my window box from Christmas to winter.
A cute snow couple going for a wintry walk.
We are having very high winds today and the forecast calls for snow and thirties the rest of the week but it's nice to have a little reprieve. I hope you are having a great Sunday!

I got 'em!!

I didn't get either of my kids the presents they asked for and I surprised them both! As most of you know my son is a major Mets fan. Way back in June I heard TJMaxx had Mets jackets on sale. I ran to the nearest one and got this Mets jacket.
See that grin? It wasn't on his list but I think he likes it!!Laurie always expects a surprise from me. We've both been talking about Suzanne's wonderful "hang ups". I was gifted one and I bought myself one in the fall. Laurie fell in love with an all brown one but wouldn't buy it. When that one was no longer available she mentioned another one she liked. I just hoped that it wouldn't sell right away because if I had bought it then Laurie would figure I got it for her.

I got her a brown and aqua one and she liked it better than the all brown one!
She looks like she's pretty happy too don't you think?

Chris said I surprised him with it too. Don't you love to give real surprises for Christmas? Of course, they always get me back!

Did you get surprised this Christmas?

Corner Cupboard

This is the corner cupboard in my living room. I just got it this year so I wasn't really sure what to put in it. The bottom shelf holds some cute bear figurines. The middle shelf has 2 tiny Christmas books and some vintage candles. If you click to enlarge you can see the Santa sleigh and reindeer and a Mr and Mrs Santa my Mom made with beads.
The top shelf is the nativity we had when I was young. (The angels on the moons are also vintage candles.)
I have never seen any pieces to this nativity anywhere. I have no idea how old they are except I remember them always being in our home and I'm close to 60. All the figures are wax. This is not the original stable.
I love the animal figures. There is a donkey between Mary and Joseph and a cow on the far right. Have you ever seen these or do you have any information about them?

Cookie Fun!

Jerzie spent the night on Saturday and her Mommy and Daddy came over on Sunday to make cookies. Jerzie and I started making Peppakoker before they got here. She had a great time rolling out the dough and using the cookie cutters.
I put hers on a separate cookie sheet and she ate one and took the rest home.
She still doesn't like getting her hands dirty or sticky. We'll have to do something about that!
Jerzie and Daddy after making 6 kinds of cookies!
Today she helped me make Chex Mix and white trash. She loved pouring everything in the dish but I did catch her stealing cheerios and pretzels! We're having fun today but let's just say I know she is 2 today! I had an apple for lunch and I shared it with her but she didn't like it with the "crust" on it.
We have very cold temps and lots of snow today so it's a great day to have the oven on. All the schools in the area are closed because of the wind and snow. I also have a pot of vegetable soup cooking on the stove.

Snowy Sunday!

We had what they are calling a 'wintery mix' on Friday. First it snowed 4 to 6 inches and then we had rain, sleet and wet snow. This 'mix' went on most of the day. When I left work at ten it was a misty rain. In the morning it was 12 degrees! These pictures are a result of the mess we had and what you see is mostly ice crystals.

The sun was shining most of the day Saturday and it looked like the yard was full of diamonds. I wish I could have captured it with the camera. For more Snowy Sunday posts or to join the fun stop over and see Chris and Laurie.

Christmas Randomness

Cedar tagged me to write 7 wierd or random things about me. I've done this a few times beforeso decided to stick to winter or Christmas things.

1.Every year, until Jerzie was born and we can't all fit in one car, the kids and I went out looking at Christmas lights. We ate candy canes and listened to the Oak Ridge Boys Christmas tape. We also stopped at MC D. for an eggnog shake. One year the first Mc D's didn't have any. We were in the drive thru and all the kids started whining. I'm sure when we got to the window the person was surprised to see a car full of adults! When we got to another one they all cheered when they said they had them. Again they were surprised to see a car of 'adults'!

2.One year, after I got our real tree up, my daughter bragged to the neighbor girl that her Mom could do anything and we didn't need a Dad around. During dinner the completely decorated tree fell over!

3.My brother and his wife watched the kids all day Saturdays for me while I worked. Since it was always dark when I got home they took the kids with them to cut down our tree. They did a pretty good job of picking one out but I'm sure they had a little help from John and Cindy.

4.I enjoy buying unique stocking stuffers and buy them all year. You get no toothpaste or deodarant from me. Everyone gets about 15 and I wrap every one.

5.One Christmas when the kids were young and the cost of metal was up,I sold some silverware to buy my kids presents. I had 90 dollars that year for presents.

6.In the past, I got several gifts for the kids at garage sales. Both of these experiences were good for my kids. I always let them know that money was tight and we only got what we could afford. I believe that made us closer as a family. You don't need money or things to be happy.

I'm not going to tag anyone as I know you are all busy but I would love to hear random facts about your Christmas traditions. Leave me a comment if you do it.

Show and Tell

My new old painted cupboard seemed like the natural spot for my barbwire Christmas tree and some papermache snowmen.I've had this tree for several years and still love it. I added some lights. greenery and the rusty star on top.

I love the rustic look of papermache pieces.

The door to the deck is in this small area and this barbwire heart always hangs on the door.
I just add some greens for winter.

Kitchen Santas

I love this Santa picture! It is on a piece of tin. He really looks like what I would expect Santa to look like. I painted this Santa. This piece has different inserts. After Christmas I'll show you my snowman insert. Remember you can click on the picture to enlarge.
I was into fence post painting for awhile. People were bringing me their old fence posts.
My glass front cupboard gets a Santa display.
Old tree light boxes and strings of lights laying around.
The Saturday Evening Post box is a puzzle of my Moms. We had the Santa on the right when I was young. I bought the other 2. The tall one is a candle and the shorter one is a wax candy holder.
I didn't set out to collect Santa but just seem drawn to them. I have to like their face or I don't want them. Some of the old ones look really scary. Do you use Santa in your Christmas decor?

My Eclectic Tree

My tree was quite expensive this year but I love a real tree and it really is a nice one. The size is perfect and it was easy to decorate.
I have a little bit of everything on my tree. I have birds like I remember on my Grandparents tree when I was young and hand crafted ones from friends. I was given the little bird feeder over 20 years ago by an elderly customer. It is 2 pieces of plastic canvas with a communion cup filled with bird seed and a tiny white bird. So simple but it's a favorite.
My Grandparents tree also had bubble lights and I love them!
My mother made tree decorations every year for all of us. She made this bird nest and the bead ornament. I also have some short and long twisted tin icicles.
Mom seemed to love making the bead ones the most. We have them in all sizes and shapes. The kids got different ones than the adults so my kids each have several she made also.
I love the old tree decorations and pick them up at sales when ever I see a good deal. Some I buy because they seem familiar so I know someone in my family had them on their tree.
Some are ones that Laurie has gotten me at craft shows. She puts one in my stocking every year just like I do for all of them.
There are a lot of memories in my Christmas tree and I would never be able to do a certain color or theme. My tree theme will always be 'family memories'!

You Got Mail!!!

This is Jerzies first look at a Christmas tree this morning. Her parents don't have theirs up yet. She was certainly fascinated. I got the mail right after lunch and there was a card addressed to Jerzie. She loved all the sparkly glitter on the card and

she loved that 'her Santa' was on the card too.

She also got some money that she said she will put in her bank when she gets home.

Thank you Darla for making my little girls day!

Food for Thought

"Never worry about the size of your Christmas tree. In the eyes of children, they are all thirty feet tall." - -- Larry Wilde

Show and Tell

Today I'd like to show you some special family pieces. The first is my Santa. Santa is about 5 feet tall and has a red (fake) velvet suit. His hair and beard are made out of spun fiberglass. He has been in our family since he was won in a 50 cent raffle when I was a teen, over 40 years ago.I can barely put my arms around him. Inside he has a cardboard frame and his arms are stuffed so they can be moved up and down.

Santa has had a few bad incidents in his 40 + years. He has traveled several miles, stood in a beauty shop window, been chewed on by mice and been in a house fire. The first thing one friend asked after my fire was if Santa was alright! I think he looks more realistic with his beard smoky gray. Every year I say it's time to get rid of him but I just can't do it. He stands on my 2nd story deck and watches my customers as they come and go. Many of them look forward to his appearance every year. The kids in the family can see him thru the kitchen window. In reality I know that I will never be the one to get rid of him.

This wooden bowl is a family item that I was given as oldest Grandaughter. It is always on my kitchen counter. It is filled with the red plastic Christmas cookie cutters I used as a child.

The holly leaves and the present are 2 of my favorites.

I still have the whole set but not the box. I also love the Santa face and the snowman. I love being surrounded by happy memories all through the year but especially at Christmas.

For more Show and Tell posts go over to Kelli's House.

Santa

Because of Jerzie I got out my Santa stocking holders this year. Ckick on the picture for a better look. This next Santa is a one of a kind. I bought it at a church auction.
I just love his face, hair and beard. Jerzie told me at lunch the other day, as she was rubbing her face, that she didn't have a beard but Daddy did. She said I didn't have one either. She doesn't realize that in a few years Gramma might have one! lol!

Miniature

Several years ago a friend gave me his collection of Hallmark miniature ornaments. Over the years Laurie has added to the collection and I have added other tiny ornaments. The trees kept getting bigger every year and now I use a tall skinny tree. This year the tree is in my kitchen.
This is one of my favorites that Laurie gave me. I'm sure you can tell why!
I love these little clip on snowmen. As you can tell by the pictures I've added a homespun fabric garland a grapevine and berry garland and white lights.
A birdhouse and an icy snowman.
A musical snow trio.
Penguins, mice and snow people.
A cat on a scooter, a mouse sleeping in a sneaker and a cute little angel.
All topped off with a sparkly snow angel.

It's Bloomin' Tuesday!

Welcome! Today I'm going to show you hydrangea pictures. I love hydrangea and have add 3 new ones to the regular hydrangea I have had for many years. I moved that very large bush this fall and hope that it will survive. I only have pictures of 2 plants.

Limelight Hydrangea

I love hydrangea no matter what stage they are in. I can't wait to see how my new ones do this year!
I have decided to take a Christmas break from Bloomin' Tuesday. I promise that it will return on Tuesday, January 6, so keep those cameras and summer pictures handy!
If you would like to join us, just add your name and permalink to Mr Linky and a link on your blog to this post. If you are here to pretend that it is still summer, sit back with a cold drink and enjoy the tour.

O Christmas Tree!

Jerzie and I have been busy already today. We decided to make a Christmas tree. Jerzie put on some cookie stickers that Lilli sent her in my package. Then we glued on some red sparkly pipe cleaners.
The very best part was putting on the shiny balls with a glue stick. Jerzie loved the glue stick, as you can tell by the number of balls on the tree!
Of course, we had to put a magnet to hang it on the fridge.
It is so much fun now that Jerzie is old enough to enjoy this kind of project.

Snowy Sunday

I didn't take these pictures today because it's too cold, windy and snowy out!

To join Snowy Sunday or check out other posts go over to Laurie and Chris'.
An update on yesterday's post: Someone checked out the union book and even as a part time employee have the right to bump someone with less seniority. Since there is such a turnover, and some over me have decided to quit I am only the 5th cashier on the list. I may not get office right away but that's okay. A rep from Human Services is supposed to come in and talk to everyone. Thanks for the concern!

Sad Day!

Yesterday was a very sad day. I got a call from one of my fellow workers from the grocery store. The bigwigs came in the morning and announced that our store would be closing on January 31st.This store employs 62 people. Hopefully the managers and full time people will get jobs in other stores. I only work about 20 hours a week and have been there about 5 years but my problem is insurance. I have prescription, dental, eye glasses and medical at no cost to me. I just got a new prescription yesterday that would have cost $238.! Now that I have register and office experience I'm not as concerned about getting a job as I am getting one with benefits.
It was hard to go to work last night and will be harder tonight because it was in the morning paper and now all our customers will know. I, along with everyone else is at a loss as to what to do. We will all have a hard time with the new ad line about big smiles!

Show and Tell

It seems that this Christmas I'm thinking "inside" the box. No, not the presents, the decorating! This sewing machine drawer is on a table in my living room. I found the adorable figurine at a discount junk store for a dollar. Click on the picture to get a better look.

This is on my dining room table. You can see by the next picture, it is an old red metal box. I bought a box of boxes for a dollar at an auction and this was in it.

I washed it off but didn't scrub it because I like the old look. None of these arrangements are permanent. I like to change things so I may use them filled with something else later.

I found this 3 compartment wooden box in a barn at a sale. It didn't even have a price on it. I guess they figured no one would want it. I think it was a dollar also. This is on a table in my bathroom. How's your decorating going? Do you think 'inside' or outside the box?
Thanks for stopping by. To see more Show and Tell posts go over to Kelli's House.

Almost!

First I'd like to apologize for not commenting much lately. I do check in on you when I have a few minutes but I know we are all in the same boat. Trying to get everything done in a short amount of time. I'm almost done with my inside and outside decorating. I've had to spend some time getting ice off my roof. Just let me say here that a telescoping tree trimmer handle with a small hoe taped to it works great to pull snow and ice of the roof! I finally called my son yesterday and he finished the job I started. Now I'm looking for someone to replace the gutter because when there is no gutter I get a waterfall in the stone part of my basement.
I'm almost done shopping and I've started some projects I need to do. My goal this weekend is to finish the projects and the decorating. Then just cookies, wrapping and getting a tree. I just found out our tree guys aren't selling this year so we need to find somewhere else. Bummer!
So how are you doing with all you need to do?
Christmas is 3 weeks from today!

It's Bloomin' Tuesday!

Edit: Mr Linky is being tempermental again today. Something to do with his host. Sorry! Jean Welcome!

I was so wrapped up with Christmas decorating that I almost forgot!

Today I'm showing you some plants that are on my wish list. These are all plants we saw on the Secret Garden Toiur this summer and I really don't know the names of most of them. Help me out if you can! I think I had this first one before but must be it didn't make it.

This is very different and I don't think that it has blooms.

I like the different colors.

I believe these are some kind of gooseneck (?) They are so gracefull looking.

This is another interesting one. It is simular to the other one but I don't think they are the same plant.

I love the frilly look!

You know how I love ferns. This is a Maidenhair fern. See how it grows aropund in a circle?

I assume this is a type of Black-eyed Susan. The reddish color atound the center is so striking.

Don't they look beautiful here with the Queen Ann's Lace? Love it!
Do you have a wish list? What I really need is more room!
If you would like to join us for Bloomin' Tuesday just add your name and permalink to Mr Linky. Please remember to add a link to this post on your blog Now sit back and enjoy the tour!

Quiet Day

Jerzie and I had a nice quiet day today. She is helping me with my decorating. Every time I plug in more lights she just says"Wow!" She laid on my bed and read books to her baby .
She has done very well going potty today and I'm extremely proud of her. We better get back to decorating if I'm ever going to get done. Have you started your decorating yet?
