Laurie and I went to our favorite nursery yesterday to get some mums. I have tried to plant and save mums but they never seem to make it. I usually just by the ones sold in the grocery store. This year we decided to buy them at the nursery and plant some. The nursery was actually cheaper and of course had more varieties.
We both got 4 for $11. By the time we left Mr Tate had given us each 4 more. He said he had way too many so we might as well take them. It sure pays to go to the same place several times every year.
Now all I have to do is figure out where to put them all.
We also went to the vegetable stand and got some gourds. I got a bunch of corn stalks,too. It was fun getting them home in my car!
Today I hauled out all the fall decorations and they are all over my basement.I just need time to put them up now.

Mr Tate had some ornamental kale also. I have never grown this but I am fascinated with it. I didn't bring any home because I don't know what to do with it. Have you ever grown any? What's your opinion of it?

I haven't grown the ornamental kale, but I've seen some at a neighbor's it has looked good for a long time, it is a little 'different' looking but I like it!
Love all the mums you brought home...I'm sure you'll find the perfect place for them:-) Such a wonderful assortment of gourds as well...that's something I've never bought but I know a lot of people make lovely centerpieces with them. Can't wait to see your Fall decorations:-) xox
I used to have a job where I had to set up and break down a salad bar that involved green kale along the edges of everything. It grossed me out so bad, that I can hardly think of kale as being pretty! But that kale certainly is...

Ornamental kale is a common fall and winter groundcover used in subdivision common areas and parking lot planters here in Arizona. Many folks use it in their garden planter beds as edging. My daughter always has some in large pots on her front porch. It really looks nice with any of these uses.

Kale: i usually make up my own big bushel basket arrangements with mum and I put the kale all around the outer edges...the purple colors works well with all the mum colors.
Jean, lovely fall displays. Regarding the mums..sometimes they over winter very successfully for me and other times not. Funny too, when there has been a hard winter, I was sure the mums wouldn't come back and low and behold, they did. Just last winter, which was a mild one, they didn't return. Go figure.

I have the same problems with mums. They hardly ever overwinter.
Once I grew the ornamental kale. I like it, but it was very tough to get it to the fall season without the worms eating holes all over it.
