Reveal!

Since it's August 1st I wanted to show you the August page from my calender my daughter gave me for Christmas.
I love this picture of my clematis. The quote says "Time flies over us but leaves it's shadow behind" Nathaniel Hawthorne.
All right! I know you can't wait to find out what the mystery plant is. A couple of you were in the right family but no one had the right answer. The plant is...
fennel!

My pictures didn't show the bronze color of the plant to well. The smaller plants look more bronze than the large one.

Fennel belongs to the Apiaceae family, which includes anise, cumin, dill and caraway.
It smells like licorice!
The yellow flowers become the fruit of the plant. The fruit is usually called seeds. The fruit can be harvested and used in cooking.
For more information on fennel click here.
I wish I could send you all a plant for trying but I don't think they would make it. I assume new plants will grow from the "fruit" since it's spread all over my property, so if you would like some fruit when it's ready, leave a comment and e-mail me your address and I'd be happy to send you some.
Thanks for participating!

urg, should've known. I've grown fennel before, but don't remember the yellow flowers. thanks for the fun guessing game, though.
