Only when it rains

This wash tub is filled with Rain Lilies from my Grandmother's yard in Florida. I've had them for over 20 years. I take them, tub and all, into the basement for the winter. These lilies will only bloom after a rain. The last good rain we had was last Friday. At that time the tub was full of leaves only. I took this shot on Monday...
and this one on Wednesday.

The bloom will last a day or 2 and then I will remove them.

If it stays warm, the next time we get a good rain they will bloom again. Once in awhile one or 2 will pop up after being watered but I only get a good showing when it rains. I love these bulbs, not only for the memories of Gramma, but for the simplicity of the bloom.

How cool is that? Sentimental plants are the best. I always hope that my daughter will like gardening when she has her own place so I can share some of my plants with her.

I admire the rain lilies in others yards. I should get some of my own, very pretty.

They're beautiful, Jean..even if only briefly. I don't think I've ever heard of rain lilies.

They are lovely! What a blessing to still have this connection to your Gramma!

How wonderful to have these from your Gramma! I have seen many of these on other blod sites, but have never grown them myself.

They are lovely!

They are so pretty, I've been eyeballing them in catalogs for years now. Do they multiply from year to year? :)

Those are beauties! I don't have a water garden, but my husband, who does not garden, does, in a whiskey barrel. He's had some kind of yellow bloom before, but not this year so far. He starts over with plants each year. I'm thinking he knows he could try to overwinter them, but chooses not to.
